AI Meets Digital Accessibility

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way we interact with digital products and services. Voice assistants that understand natural speech, image recognition that describes our surroundings, and tools that simplify complex text are now part of everyday life. But alongside these exciting developments come important questions about accessibility, inclusion, and equity.

For many disabled people, AI is helping to unlock greater independence, confidence, and participation. For accessibility professionals, AI offers smarter ways to evaluate digital experiences. And for the teams designing and developing AI, it brings new responsibility: ensuring these systems work well for everyone — not just the ‘average’ user.

1. Empowering Disabled Users through AI

AI is creating powerful new forms of independence for disabled users by enabling personalised, flexible ways to access and interact with content. Assistive technologies powered by AI are already helping people communicate, navigate spaces, and manage daily life.

Examples include:

  • Microsoft Seeing AI – provides spoken descriptions of people, text and objects through a smartphone camera.
  • Be My AI – allows blind users to ask detailed questions about images, providing richer visual interpretation.
  • Google Lookout – uses AI to identify objects and read text in real time.
  • Live transcription tools (e.g. Google Live Transcribe, Otter.ai) – offer instant captions for meetings and conversations.
  • AI-assisted prosthetics – interpret muscle signals to allow more intuitive control.
  • Predictive reminders and task support – help users with memory or executive function challenges manage routines more effectively.

AI is also improving access to information for people with cognitive or learning disabilities. Tools such as Microsoft Immersive Reader, TextHelp Read&Write and AI writing assistants like Wordtune or ChatGPT can simplify or clarify text, making content more understandable and less overwhelming.

However, these benefits come with important caveats. AI-generated captions can misinterpret speech, and automatic image descriptions may miss context or nuance. Decisions made by AI systems also involve highly personal data, raising questions about privacy and trust.

AI can support more inclusive experiences — but only if it is designed transparently, tested with real users, and complemented by human judgement.

2. Transforming Accessibility Evaluation

AI is also reshaping how accessibility teams test and improve digital experiences. Instead of replacing human expertise, AI helps specialists focus time where it matters most — on interpretation, inclusive design decisions, and meaningful improvements.

AI-enabled evaluation tools can now analyse websites and applications at scale, identifying patterns such as low contrast, missing labels or inconsistent structure. Tools like Deque’s axe DevTools and Evinced use machine learning to detect accessibility issues that traditional rule-based scanners might overlook.

However, automated testing can only go so far. Accessibility is not just about technical compliance; it is about real people being able to complete tasks with confidence and ease. Automated tools may identify a missing alt attribute — but only a trained human can determine whether the description is meaningful in context.

The most effective approach will continue to be collaborative: AI for scale and efficiency, human expertise for empathy and judgement.

3. Designing Accessible AI Systems

As AI becomes more embedded in everyday digital services, it must be designed to be accessible, inclusive and ethical from the outset.

This means:

  • Training AI on diverse datasets, including data from disabled people.
  • Designing multimodal interfaces that support voice, text, touch and switch access.
  • Ensuring AI-generated content, such as alt text or summaries, can be reviewed and corrected by humans.
  • Aligning with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidlines (WCAG) and procurement requirements like EN 301 549.
  • Involving disabled users directly in testing and co-design.

AI has the potential to be one of the most inclusive technologies ever developed — but only if we actively design it to be.
