Mastering UX Benchmarking: Your Secret Weapon for Digital Competitive Advantage
1 August 2024 - Chris Rourke
User experience (UX) benchmarking is a strategic approach to UX research that provides insights, meaningful improvements, and a competitive edge. It's a powerful UX method that we enjoy delivering because it provides clear comparative quantitative evidence that motivates clients to implement design changes which result in business success.
Furthermore, with our recent introduction of MUiQ, the MeasuringU Intelligent Questioning Platform to the UK, we are ideally placed to perform full-service UX benchmarking. Clients will also be able to manage their own UX benchmarking studies, with our support, through an MUIQ subscription.
Benefits at a Glance
- Gain clear comparative insights
- Identify competitive advantages
- Prioritise UX resources effectively
- Drive continuous improvement
- Enhance user satisfaction and conversion rates
- Refine market positioning
In this article, we'll introduce the process for UX benchmarking and compare it to standard usability testing. We'll also provide a Part 2 article with advice on how to best design your UX benchmark research depending on your goals, find your participants, analyse data, and understand the results from your study.
What is UX Benchmarking?
In UX benchmarking, a company compares the user experience (UX) of their own website against their historical performance or against their competitors. The latter type is referred to as competitive UX benchmarking since the goal is to understand how your own site compares against your peers and competitors.
UX benchmarking helps organisations identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to improve their digital interfaces and user experience. As the name implies, the salient aspect of this method is comparison against some form of baseline or benchmark so that you can judge your relative performance or direction of travel.
The UX Benchmarking Process
1. Identifying Competitors or Benchmarks:
- Choose historical benchmarks or relevant peers for comparison
- Select competitors based on industry relevance, market positioning, and UX maturity
2. Defining Metrics:
- Establish key UX metrics to measure
- Consider Key Experience Indicators and Google's Heart Framework(this will open in a new window)
- Focus on metrics like Task Completion Rate, Net Promoter Score (NPS), System Usability Scale (SUS), and SUPR-Q
3. Conducting Evaluations:
- Perform usability tests on your own and competitors' websites
- Use similar key tasks and participant profiles for consistency
- Leverage quantitative UX benchmarking for statistical evidence
4. Analysing Data:
- Compare collective data to identify performance differences
- Look at task performance, usability issues, and metric scores
5. Reporting Findings:
- Summarise insights using graphs, charts, and user quotes
- Provide actionable recommendations for improvement
What Can Be Compared?
UX benchmarking allows for the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data on various aspects of user experience, including:
- Ease of use or task difficulty (Single Ease Question - SEQ)
- Task completion rates, times, or error rates
- User satisfaction scores (SUS, SUPR-Q)
- Information architecture and navigation performance
- Content clarity and credibility
Key Benefits of UX Benchmarking
While standard usability testing on your own site is valuable, UX benchmarking offers additional strategic benefits:
1. Comparative Analysis
- Provides context for your site's performance
- Highlights gaps relative to competitors
- Ensures improvements align with industry standards
2. Trend Identification
- Identifies patterns in user behaviour over time
- Supports long-term strategic planning
3. Actionable Insights
- Highlights competitive advantage opportunities
- Informs ways to outperform competitors
4. Continuous Improvement
- Tracks progress over time
- Ensures positive evolution of digital experience
5. Strategic Decision Making
- Informs user-centred design strategy
- Helps prioritise UX improvements based on competitive gaps
6. Enhanced User Satisfaction and Conversion
- Pinpoints specific usability issues
- Leads to higher user satisfaction and improved conversion rates
7. Market Positioning
- Refines overall market positioning
- Positions superior UX as a key differentiator
The Future of UX Benchmarking
As digital experiences continue to evolve, we predict that UX benchmarking will become increasingly crucial for businesses. The integration of AI and machine learning into UX research tools like MUiQ will allow for more sophisticated analysis and predictive insights. This will enable companies to not only react to current trends but also anticipate future user needs and expectations.
Case Study: Flower Delivery Service Uncovers Crucial UX Insights
A recent UX benchmark study of five major flower delivery websites revealed how this method can uncover critical areas for improvement. The study found significant variations in user experience across competitors, with task completion rates ranging from 71% to 93% for a simple "find and attempt to purchase" task. This stark difference highlights how UX benchmarking can identify specific areas where a company might be falling behind its competitors, potentially losing customers and revenue. By pinpointing these gaps, companies can focus their efforts on the most impactful improvements. For instance, a company with a lower task completion rate could prioritise streamlining their purchase process, potentially boosting their conversion rates to match or exceed the 93% achieved by the leading competitor. This targeted approach to UX enhancement, driven by competitive benchmarking data, could lead to substantial improvements in user satisfaction and business performance.
To maximize its benefits, UX benchmarking should be continuous (quarterly, bi-annually, yearly) rather than a one-time activity. By regularly assessing performance against competitors or past versions, companies can make more informed decisions, prioritise design efforts, and create digital products that truly meet user needs for a competitive edge.
Remember, in the fast-paced digital world, standing still means falling behind. UX benchmarking is your compass for navigating the competitive landscape and ensuring your digital experience remains at the forefront of user expectations.
In UX benchmarking a company compares the user experience (UX) of their own website against their own historical performance or against their competitors. The latter type is referred to as competitive UX benchmarking since the goal is to understand how your own site compares against your peers and competitors.
